Did you know that affiliate marketing and incentivized referrals were crucial in PayPal's initial expansion and establishing itself as a trusted payment platform?
In its early days, PayPal used a referral program to get a critical mass of early adopters in 2000. Within just a few months in 2000, PayPal acquired 4 million new users thanks to its referral program, which put it on the map.
Does PayPal have an active referral program now? PayPal still utilizes a referral program. However, their referral program is not permanent but rather runs periodically.
At the moment, PayPal has an active referral program for Canada.
What about an affiliate program? Does PayPal have an affiliate program? No, PayPal does have an affiliate program at the moment.

PayPal Affiliate Program
PayPal has a long tradition of referral programs, but the same cannot be said about affiliate programs.
PayPal has never had an affiliate program for the USA.
They have grown so much with their referral program that there was no need to launch an affiliate program.
PayPal used to have an affiliate program for Canada which they hosted on CJ Affiliate and Flex Offers.
It is unknown whether PayPal closed the program temporarily or permanently.

Wise
While PayPal offers a wide range of services, including merchant solutions and a robust buyer protection program, Wise specializes in international money transfers with competitive exchange rates and transparent fees.

Payoneer
Another prominent online payment platform is Payoneer.
Payoneer is primarily designed for freelancers, online sellers, and businesses that engage in cross-border transactions, offering them the ability to receive payments from international clients and marketplaces efficiently.

The program has a 30-day cookie duration, and you can earn $25 per referral.
Revolut
Revolut is in many ways similar to Wise. Just like Wise, Revolut was created to disrupt traditional banking.
Revolut also specializes in international money transfers and offers low fees. Unlike Wise, Revolut supports cryptocurrencies.

The program has a 30-day cookie duration, and you can earn £5 (around $6) per referral.
PayPal Referral Program
As mentioned earlier, PayPal no longer has a permanent referral program.
Their original referral program, which was known as Referral Bonus Program, was terminated in 2012.
Since then, PayPal occasionally brings their referral program back, but always for a limited time.
If there is a referral program, you will see it in your PayPal account.
Often times PayPal advertises it in the account dashboard, so it is hard to miss.
The terms and rewards are almost always different.
In general, the reward is around $10-$25.
Besides joining PayPal, your referral also has to take additional actions.
For example, they have to spend a certain amount within a given period or receive an international payment of some minimal amount.
There is always a cap on how much in rewards you can earn. From what I could see, the reward cap is usually between $100-$250.
With the Canadian PayPal referral program that is currently active, you can invite up to ten friends and earn up to $100 in rewards ($10 for each referral) when they spend at least $5 each. They have to spend $5 within 30 days of signup.
What is important to note is that you should only refer family, friends, and acquaintances. PayPal forbids in their terms to publicly distribute your invitation link.
You have probably seen many people sharing their invitation links in YouTube descriptions to PayPal-related videos (at least I have many times), but that is not allowed.
Also, what is important to note is that you cannot use your rewards (essentials vouchers) for all PayPal purchase.
For example, eligible purchases do not include:
- Sending/receiving money transactions
- Charitable donations
- Purchases made using PayPal.me
- Debit or credit card purchases made using the card directly and not through your PayPal account
- PayPal transaction fees
- Transactions made in any other currency beyond CAD
Your rewards are viewable in the “Offers” section in your PayPal account, and they must be redeemed within 90 days.
